My friends the Waters

I'm writing this for my good friends, Seth and Maria Waters and their 3 beautiful kids, Ella, Levi and Ian. They didn't ask me to but I did ask their permission.

Ya see, 4 months ago they left comfortable Durango to pursue a God-dream. A huge, major, awesome, challenging God-sized dream. Although it's only been 4 months, the dream started several years ago when God moved in their hearts to start a church. They prayed over a map of the US for over a year until God led them to the Bay area in California. Once they took that step of faith God began revealing His plan for their church.

This family doesn't just go and do things, they are planners, readers, learners, researchers, wisdom-seekers. I watched them go through the process as they were preparing for this dream. God opened door after door as He led them on this journey. He prepared them with resources, finances and hearts that were broken and excited to minister to people in San Francisco - an incredibly challenging area for Christian ministry - yet home to millions who desperately want hope and love. Seth and Maria knew that it was their calling to find them, meet them, love them, and be Jesus to them. It's definitely not a job for the faint of heart. I can't tell you how many times I said to myself "It's amazing what they are doing. I'm not sure I could do that. God would have to absolutely grab hold of my heart and move me." And that's exactly what He did for them.

I could tell in talking with them over the last year, that God was changing them, challenging them and equipping them. They believe, wholeheartedly, that God has called them to this city. Since they've been there they've seen miracles happen. Real life, modern miracles. People being healed from sickness and pain. They've seen lives changed and people come along side them and share in their dream of ministering to the Bay area. Along the way God has revealed more and more of Himself and His plans. They have not doubted His plan for them there.

They launched their church in an unconventional way. They did 4 preview services throughout the summer. Meaning, they did a service, waited 3 weeks and ministered and built ministry teams before doing another service. They were successful in building a core group of people to help them run services. They walked all over the Bay area and knocked on thousands of doors and put thousands of flyers on windshields. They met people, prayed for them, and just got to know their city.

Throughout this process they have always had accountability and wise people to lean on, to pray with, to get advice from. People who have held them accountable spiritually and financially. Honestly, these people have done this the right way. Humbly, prayerfully, and full-throttle. If you know Seth, you know that He can't do it part way. It's all or nothing.

I wanted to share all of that so you could know the kind of people they are. They are genuine, hard-working people who love Jesus and are willing to follow Him no matter what. They are facing the most challenging place in their ministry by far to date, this very day. For some reason {ok lets face it, the enemy is NOT happy with their progress} they are facing financial struggles. And I don't mean struggles like we can't buy the new TV we want this month, I'm talking struggles like if we don't get money we don't get a paycheck this month and we don't pay rent, utilities, food etc...Did I mention they have a 3-yr old daughter and 17 mo old twin boys? Did I also mention that they have been good stewards of the finances and resources that have been given to them to launch this church? Did I mention that Maria has put it over a dozen applications to find a job to help support them and hasn't heard back from a single one? Did I mention that San Fran is not a cheap place to live?

They have never in their lives come across such an unclear crossroad. They know they are where God called them to be, they know they have done what He's asked of them, they have no desire to leave the Bay area, HOWEVER, they are on the verge of losing everything they have worked so hard for. They are in a do or die situation. If the money does not come in, they will have to close the doors of their brand new church and that devestates them. It grieves my heart as well. These people have walked through some serious stuff in the 4 months they've been there, they don't want it to end.

Please join with me in praying for some serious financial breakthrough! Only my God can do something so big and so huge and so amazing to continue this ministry. And I will believe that He will do it. And believe me, the only One who can do something about this is my God. It's a God-sized problem. As much as we are all faithful in things we do and as much as we'd like to not rely on finances it still takes money to do things. It takes money to get a building to meet in, to have sound and microphones, to have things for the Children's ministry, to support the 2 staff members who are working around the clock to reach the city...

So, thank you for reading my post about the Waters. I know it was long but they are so worth it. They are good people who need prayer for their future in a major way. MAJOR way. I will keep you updated.

Have you ever...

...washed a spray bottle with your laundry in the washing machine? Apparently there was a spray bottle in the boys clothes hamper, tangled up in their dirty laundry. Sparkling clean now! Thank goodness it didn't go through the dryer. Might have melted...

Thankful Thursday

Yesterday a little before 4pm, Alisha {the young mom - 26!- I recently blogged about who was diagnosed with stomach cancer}, passed away. She is now in the arms of Jesus. Free from pain.

That doesn't always make it easier for those left behind. Like her parents, her husband, her children (6 and 2 months), her family and friends. They/we are all still having to deal with her being gone.

But God has said in His word "Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" 1Thessalonians 5:18

I also just finished another book for book club called "Scared". A wonderful, challenging book about the AIDS crisis and orphans in Africa. How do you give thanks when there is so much wrong in this world? So much hurt and pain?

I was praying about that last night. Praying for God to show me how to be thankful during a time like this. I was amazed at some of the things he brought to my mind as I thought about Alisha and being thankful.

I'm thankful that she had 26 years here on earth, to love, to laugh, to live.

I'm thankful for her husband John who, although is going through unimaginable pain and grief right now, is here for her daughters. To teach them about their mom and love them and take care of them.

I'm thankful for her beautiful girls. Yes, it will be a difficult road to walk, but God's grace and mercy will be with them.

I'm thankful that Alisha knew Jesus. What a wonderful hope we have to see her again. To know that she is in heaven, free from pain and suffering.

I'm thankful for her beautiful voice. Like an angel. I was privileged to hear her sing {with her cousin, Lacy who also has an amazing voice}, many times during her time in our youth group, and it always gave me God-bumps. She's now singing with the angels.

I'm thankful for her family - parents, aunts, uncles, cousins etc... - to surround her husband and kids and lift them up during this time.

Thank you Lord that no matter the circumstances, we can trust You.

Jack Douglas turns 1!

Jack's actual birthday was on the 13th but because we'd just gotten back from vacation we didn't do a party till last weekend.

Here's some of the party go-ers watching a video online.
Ryan, Sommer, Jerome, Matt, Bill and Mark
Tiff and Jo
Jinny, Jen and baby Josie {hiding under the blanket - forgive me Jen it's the only pic I had!}
Opening the goods
New bath toys. Which, by the way, Kale and Kate opened and played with. Jack chased them around the room trying to get it back. The joys of being the baby brother.
I got a book!
And it says...oh I don't know.
Jack's cake. A jack-in-the-box!
He wasn't sure what to think.
I can do this.
Oh yeah. I can do this.
And I can do this again!
Don't you want some? Put the camera down and try it.
It's good!

Cupcakes were a hit.
Anna banana
Maddie-cakes!
Violet Rae
Benen boy
Kate-kins

The aftermath of the cake
Sweet success!

Kale's big news

On Saturday - the 19th - Kale came to Mark during breakfast and said that his tooth was really loose {he's been showing us his loose tooth for the past 3 weeks!}. Mark looked and asked him if he was ready for it to come out. Kale wasn't so sure. So I asked him if I could feel it.

Kale came over to me and when he opened his mouth it was obvious that his tooth was hanging on by a nano-thread. I asked if I could feel it and he said yes.

As soon as I stuck my fingers in his mouth the tooth practically fell out in my hand. I set it on the table as he was saying to me "do you think it's ready to come out?"

I showed him the tooth and he screamed {in excitement I promise}. He was so thrilled that he'd finally lost a tooth. We had to document of course.

And FINALLY! the family picture

You're not going to believe this. This is my final post of our vacation to Denver and Steamboat Springs. You survived the road trip!

My final pictures are of our crazy little Palmer family. As you might expect, there is a story with this if you want to hear it.
Oh yes. There is a story.

After dinner, Tuesday night, our last night there, we piled into the yard to take a family pic. As soon as dinner was over, Chad and Mark raced outside to set up the camera and the seats for grandma and grandpa. Julie and I had to fix our faces {aka apply makeup}. I also needed to get the kids ready. Kate's hair was all over the place! So I went to our bathroom, fixed my face, and got ready to brush Kate's hair.

As I'm getting the brush out, grandma comes downstairs with Jack and informs me that he smells. Booger. I finish Kate's hair and send her out to dad, along with Kale who spent 10 minutes trying to put on his shoes. Then I go find Jack.

Grandma has him upstairs and after I lay him down and begin the process of poop cleaning I realize that this poop is much more than a wipe {or 30! for that matter} can handle. It's gonna take a bath. Ewww.

Just as I was saying that to Margie, Alisha comes upstairs to let us know that Mark said to hurry because we were losing light. Seriously? I told Alisha to tell Mark that
his child pooped everywhere and now needed a bath {do ya like how I emphasize everything?}. By the way - I wasn't going to shoot the messenger, I promise. And Mark didn't know what was going on either. It was just the timing that was comical {well at least much later I thought it was comical}.

Margie and I took him {Jack not Mark} down to our bathroom and quickly washed off as much poop as possible in 30 seconds or less. Ok maybe not 30 seconds but it was fast. I got him dried off and dressed {in new clothes} only to realize that I now had poop on my pants and shirt. Now I needed to change! Oh bother!

After I finally got everything done I met everyone outside for our family picture. I gave Mark a cheesy grin when he asked if everything was ok. Ummmmmm yeah. Poop is always so much fun. Especially under pressure. Ah but it makes a memorable story.

Because I'm so heartbroken...

I don't know how to write this really. I'm so sad I'm not sure how to say it.

I just read a blog from one of my old highschool girls, a sweet friend. Her cousin, also an old highschooler {only in her 20's!}, named Alisha, is in the fight for her life. Literally.

Near the end of July, while 7 months pregnant with her 2nd child {her oldest is a 1st grader}, Alisha was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She went to Denver to deliver her daughter and begin treatment. The plan was to remove her ovaries.

After the baby was born and they did some more tests, they discovered that she actually had stomach cancer. And it was very aggressive.

Sadly, she was just told, within the last day or so, that her cancer is terminal. Less than two months since finding out she even had it.

I am beyond sad that this special girl, this mommy, this wife, cousin, daughter, friend, may very well not live to see her daughter's first birthday. As a mom this is breaking my heart. I can not imagine how she is feeling right now. I can't imagine how her family is feeling.

All I can do is cry and pray. Pray that my God who is a God of miracles would heal her from this. It doesn't make sense. I'm not saying it has to make sense but it sure would be nice to know why in the world this would happen to this young mom.

Her cousin, Lacy, has written some very amazing posts about this journey. One in particular that I love. It's how God spoke to her during this difficult time. Please take a moment and read it if you can. It's incredibly profound. And while you're there, take a moment to leave a comment and/or to pray for her and Alisha and their family.

This is a most difficult journey for all of them.

Thanks.

Da Hot Springs

We saved Strawberry Park hot springs for Tuesday when most of the Labor Day crowd had left. It turned out to be a good choice.

God is the God of our yesterdays. He allows us the memory of them so we can turn the past into the ministry for the future.

"I don't think you can explain how Christian faith works. It is a mystery. And I love this about Christian spirituality. It cannot be explained, and yet it is beautiful and true. It is something you feel, and it comes from the soul."
