Kate hasn't been feeling well for a couple weeks now. Lots of things can be attributed to all of it. Saturday, though, made us really wonder if we had missed something. She had gone in last weekend with Kale for a strep test - that came back negative for her and positive for Kale - but she was put on antibiotics anyway. They figured she'd probably get it.
But she wasn't getting better. Saturday she started coughing terribly. To the point of gagging and throwing up. She got really snuggly and sleepy-like. I put together a lot of seperate things and wondered if she had a Urinary Tract Infection. I called the pediatrician to make sure {left untreated in children can cause bladder and kidney problems, I didn't want to wait longer if that was the case}. The nurses on-call advised Urgent Care because it sounded like a UTI.
So Kate and I loaded up and went to the hospital ER. It was closer and they take her insurance. We spent 5 very long hours in a tiny little room flipping through endless channels and watching horrible cartoons that she'd never be allowed to watch at home, to find out that she didn't have a UTI but they were very concerned about her breathing and oxygen levels in her blood. So they decided to finally admit her to the hospital at 11:00pm. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay past her bedtime. She wanted me to take this picture so she could show daddy her hospital jammies.
She was in and out of losing it with the cords and beeping and people and me. By the time we got to our room she was on oxygen, a pulse/blood oxygen monitor, and had an IV started in her arm {that was horrible to watch}. She had had tests done for RSV, the flu {I'm sure swine flu was mentioned to some dr at some point} and whooping cough. All negative (although whooping cough takes a couple days but they're pretty sure it's not that since she's up to date on her vaccinations). They did a chest x-ray to check for pneumonia. Negative. She had a nebulizer treatment done to help clear up her lungs. They took blood and were going to run tests on that. I haven't heard anything back from that.
She was wiped out. Then at midnight, the "breathing" dr came in and did another nebulizer treatment on her. She did great for that and crashed shortly after. So much on such a small kid.
We At 8, Kate woke up when the
We spent the morning watching more cartoons {these ones were better}, taking a walk in the hospitals little red wagon, and playing Dr {she was given a play stethoscope - she calls it a stepacope}. All while fighting the various cords. She would do great with them for a while but if one pulled wrong she would flip out and scream and try to pull them off. I have to say that I'm a little exhausted from making things better over and over and over again. She was a trooper though and I really can't blame her. It was a tough thing to go through for a three yr old. We were cut loose after lunch and sent home with 5 tanks of oxygen. Kate was less than thrilled with having to bring home the horrible cord she'd fought for the last 18 hours. So screaming happened from hospital to home and then some. She is finally resting peacefully/fitfully in her very own bed. Thank you Lord that it wasn't worse. I'm okay and totally at peace. God is good. She's home, safe, getting better and sleeping!
This was her "princess" bed. It had a canopy of sorts and walls all around but she loved it. She slept in it and was thrilled to have her special bed. So glad....
