Probably half a dozen times in the last year we've been out in the living room watching a show or something when we hear horrible screams coming from Kate's room. One of us will go into her room and try to calm her down only to find, when we get in there, that she's inconsolable, not really awake, thrashing in her bed, screaming for mom or dad, crying, talking and unable to wake up. Basically you just have to watch this heart wrenching scene and there's nothing you can do.
Last night was no different. She'd been in bed for about an hour when it started. And it went on for about 2 hours. Not consistently but she'd scream for 10 minutes or so, be calm for another 20 maybe, then scream again. I had heard about night terrors and wondered if this is what it was.
When I looked it up on a pediatric website it sounded like they were in our house describing Kate. I was kind of relieved actually. To be able to read what was happening to her, that she is ok, won't remember it, and will eventually grow out of it. The site actually talked about how hard it is for a parent to watch {so thankful that we weren't the only ones}.
They say that they are triggered, most often, from extreme tiredness. That doesn't surprise me. Sundays are long hard days and she did not nap. We had a softball game last night so she didn't get to bed till late. Poor thing.
I don't recall ever watching Kale go through this. I'm pretty sure I'd remember. I'm praying they end soon - we'll definitely have to be careful about how late we're out at night. For now we'll just pray for her and enjoy the free snuggles she gives out at the end.
On a different note, last Friday we signed her up for a dance class. It's a four week class starting this Friday. She's so excited to wear her leotard and her tutu. I'm excited to see her dance around and I can't wait to take pictures! I'll post them I promise!
One more thing, Mark and I tackled our bedroom this weekend {Jack had to take his afternoon nap with Kale - we prayed they'd sleep and they did!}. Mark was great and made it go by fast. It's amazing what you can accomplish when you're super motivated. The reward is a wonderful, clean, decluttered, peaceful bedroom. I love it!
