While the big cheese was away

I mentioned in an earlier post that last week Mark {aka the big cheese} left for a 3 day mini-sabbatical. He got back Wednesday, we had our wahoo Wednesday, he worked Thursday then left early Friday morning for a Promise Keeper event in Denver. He got back early Sunday morning (12:30am), slept till 5am then got up for church. He had a busy week so we decided to try and have one too. Ya know, to pass the time.

So this is a random post about some of the things we did and experienced last week, mostly while Mark was gone.

First my sister sent me a few shots of my kids and one shot of the big black clouds I was talking about in an earlier post, that she took in Omaha. I played with Instagram and had fun changing the look of the pictures.

Love that sass! {most of the time...} Yup. Time out on vacation.Do you SEE how big and black that is?!?!?!? THAT would be why we were driving away fast with sirens blaring....It was dusk. Not midnight I promise!Anywho....We had lunch with some friends on Tuesday - when we went to the river in Bayfield- then I had book club at my house Tuesday night.

Thursday I had lunch with another friend at a park. Our kids played wonderfully together while we talked and talked and talked. Unfortunately this is the only picture I got. 4 of us never made it in front of the camera.
After the park we went to her house to continue with our chatting - we seriously talked forever! While we were out on her back deck and a wasp flew up my shorts/capris. At first I thought it was a stray hair or thread or something and tried to brush it away. Nope. It started stinging and wouldn't stop!

I think I got stung 4 times. We immediately put ice on it and I took Benedryl. Everything seemed fine. No real big swelling and the pain went away. Whew.

Until the next day. When I woke up after Mark left on Friday, my knee and thigh were red, swollen and itching like crazy! I tried putting stuff on it but we left in the morning to visit another friend and spent the afternoon at her house up in the mountains. I wasn't able to ice it (or broccoli it - frozen bags of veggies work wonderfully too!) till later that night during our small group at our house.
Saturday my friend Kim gave me a bag of different things she's used on her family for stuff like this. The spray on Benedryl helped a lot. Now it's just really weirdly bruised and that didn't happen till Sunday...Who knew it was a gift that keeps on giving?
And yes I did really take pictures of my own leg. I'm weird, I know, but I was very fascinated!
Saturday we had a huge gust of wind that did this....
I kept staring at it wondering how in the world that happened!

Then I visited our garden. Many things don't look so hot. We believe it's because some of the straw had hay seeds in it that are competing. So a couple of the bales are growing some beautiful hay but the others are growing some awesome lettuce and peppers and hopefully tomatoes.
On the way to church on Sunday - and the kids' first time seeing Mark - Kate drew him a picture of his family in case he forgot what we looked like...and in case you're having a hard time telling who's who, it goes from left to right: Kate, Jack, Kale, Mark and Me. I look like I have huge boobs but I'm pretty sure they are puffy sleeves on my queen dress...And that's what happened while the big cheese was away :)

Oh yes we did!

We did the WWE haircut last night. The mullet/boy band/unloved child hair-do is gone. Although no matter what kinda hair this kid has I can't help but think he's stinkin' adorable (clearly an objective opinion :) )

Here's the before. In this shot all he knew was that he got candy (yes we bribe). By the time we were done he'd had M&Ms, singing, dancing, Diego on the iPod and lots of begging. Seriously. Mark is the entertainer and I'm the fast-as-I-possibly-can-head shaver. I think both of us have difficult jobs. The outcome of mine is just more obvious. Ya know, stray long hairs that kinda twang out to the side or straight up. Yes he has some but overall he'll live...and so will we.
I couldn't take an after picture last night because by the time we were done he was so wound up and mad at us (and also had a touch of a sugar rush) he wouldn't look at or smile at the camera. Today was slightly easier but you'll notice he still wouldn't look at me.
Before we went to the Chiropractor this morning Kate was playing with my iPod. Jack just had to get a closer look....
We finished up school this morning (at least the bulk of it) and I sent them out for recess. That's why I have a minute to blog then I'm headed to make lunch. I go from teacher to lunch lady in a matter of moments.
Oh we also went to Walmart yesterday to get a preschool school book for Kate and also some art projects for all our sanity. We came home with a clay art project. Tried it this morning. Jack tried eating it, Kate rolled it and played dolls with it, and Kale tried to make every animal on the box. He did pretty good.

2.17.04

6 years ago today my life was changed as I became the mom of the most awesome little man. He surprised us 3 1/2 weeks early and has been surprising us ever since.
He is funny.
He is full of life. He loves to snuggle.
He makes us laugh!
He is one of the most thoughtful and curious people I know. He is always thinking!
He likes to stand out. Some times is a little unsure about new things and other times is excited to try them.
He is loving and smiley and sweet.
He loves his Transformers, GI Joes and Legos. He loves to read and be read to. He's an amazing artist and loves to color, draw, paint, sculpt and be creative.
His painting of a fish underwater. We're gonna frame this and put it up in the new bathroom.Hope this isn't too hard to see. The next 2 pictures are his "hidden" pictures. He came out of his room after his quiet time one afternoon and had drawn these. The key is along the bottom. You will find those pictures hidden in the main picture. Very clever I thought! And here is our family and Ms. Jinny surfing the big waves...I have no doubt that he will be successful. He has Jesus in his heart and wants to make sure everyone does.
Oh yeah, and he loves sugar :)
Happy birthday Kale. You are such a joy to us. You bless us with your unique and awesome personality, your love, and your questions. We love, love who you are!

Kale's artwork

I love it when Kale draws. He's got such an awesome imagination. Here's some of his latest creations.

This is an anthill. On the left side there are red termites. {I didn't know he even knew about termites} There's also a baby ant. The letters "spell" baby ant. Close...
This is the ocean. There is an island with a palm tree. There is a tsunami wave that has taken out a surf board. The green spots are pieces of the surf board. Also there is a barracuda under the water waiting to eat the surf board. {Where does he come up with this stuff?}
This is a picture of an octopus, and a shark eating a squid.
Mr. Potato HeadAnother shark with dinner inside him already. He displayed his softer side in this one. It's a picture of him and one of his friends. There are hearts all around {don't ask..I don't know why}. The green person with the giant heart on his head is Kale. This is an alligator. This one I had to take two pictures of. So you could see all the creatures right side up.
This first one - the animals right side up - are scorpions. And these are ants.Entertaining isn't it?

God is the God of our yesterdays. He allows us the memory of them so we can turn the past into the ministry for the future.

"I don't think you can explain how Christian faith works. It is a mystery. And I love this about Christian spirituality. It cannot be explained, and yet it is beautiful and true. It is something you feel, and it comes from the soul."
